Pumps

  • Wine and Juice. All of the pumps can move juice.
  • Must---crushed grapes---skins AND juice. Euro 50, Euro 60, elliptical rotor, and peristaltic pumps. You cannot use a flexible impeller pump to move pomace.
    • Note: If you crush into macrobins, you cannot pump the juice off the top and then pump the remaining solids with a flexible impeller pump. Flexible impeller pumps work fine provided you pump from the bottom of the macrobin---thus pumping the skins with the juice.
  • Pomace---skins without the juice. The peristaltic and elliptical pumps can move pomace. This includes pomace after pressing as well as skins remaining after red wine ferment.

Revello Peristaltic Pumps

We are pleased to now offer Revello peristaltic pumps. Peristaltic pumps are the most delicate wine pumps and Revello has been producting peristaltic pumps for neighboring Barolo and Barbaresco producers for many years.

The wine or must is simply pushed through a rubber hose. There is no impeller. The product contacts only the hose. The hose is periodically compressed and relaxed, thus pushing the product. The advantages of peristaltic pumps are delicate pumping preventing oxidation, shaking, emulsions, crushing of seeds and berries, and no contact between the wine and mechanical parts.

  • NORD motors and Variable Speed Frequency Drives. NORD motors/inverters are top quality, widely available in North America, and are very reliable. UL/CSA compliance.
  • Reversible
  • Rotating aluminum rollers reduce friction and extend hose life
  • Pressure buffer tanks on both inlet and outlet eliminate 'knocking'
  • Safety pressure switch is standard
  • Automatic lubrication of the rubber hose
  • Optional hoppers for must/pomace.
  • Manufactured by Revello

Peristaltic pumps are the most gentle of wine/must pumps. The product is simply pushed through a rubber hose. There is no impeller. The product contacts only the hose. The hose is periodically compressed and relaxed, thus pushing the product.

St. Patrick's is the exclusive North American distributor of Revello peristaltic pumps.

Hoppers connect directly to the pumps---inlet flange of pump is bolted to outlet flange of hopper. Stainless steel hopper and auger. Motor with gear reduction. (230 V, 3-phase. 1 HP, 3.6A) Plugs into control panel of pump. Takes ~15 minutes to attach/remove the hopper.
Hopper dimensions: 32"x30"x17"H. 3" TriClamp drain outlet.

Elliptical Rotor Pump
Transfers whole grapes, must or pomace. Also moves pomace after fermentation or pressing. Gentle—does not break fruit or stems.

Good match with large destemmer, for example Jolly 100 or 150. Slides under destemmer.

  • Bypass (Euro 30 only) can be opened to reduce the flow by ~25%. Bypass is not important on variable speed pumps. A bypass is a stainless valve and tube that connects the output of the pump to the input. Bypass should not be used when pumping must.
  • Coaxial means the pump is driven directly by the motor.
  • Dry Run Protection: This is a flow sensor that shuts off the pump when flow stops. This guards against burning up the impeller. . Note it shuts the pump off when flow stops, but does not automatically turn on again when liquid is present. You must turn pump back on.
  • Remote pumps have ON/OFF, Forward/Reverse, and Speed Control. You can also control the pump from the electrical box on the pump cart.

Replacement Impellers
Before ordering an impeller: Measure the diameter and length of the impeller, count the number of fins, and identify the model number and manufacturer.

Instructions for Cleaning the pump head or replacing the impeller of the T-25.

Flexible Impeller Pumps are a type of Positive Displacement Pump. They can pump wine with seeds and skin. They operate at low rpms with low shear forces and thus do not damage wine.

Do not run a flexible impeller dry for over 30 seconds.

How a flexible impeller pump operates. At first glance, flexible impeller pumps appear to be centrifugal pumps in which a high rpm impeller uses centrifugal force to move liquid. However, flexible impeller pumps are Positive Displacement pumps in which alternating high and low pressure is generated within the pump head. The eccentric cavity creates alternating pressure differential as the flexible impeller is compressed and then released, thus priming the juice or must into the cavity. Since the pump does not rely on centrifugal force, the rpm can be low and therefore does not apply shear force to the must or wine.

Jet05 Parts
Drain the pumphead after use. This is the most important maintenance. Water, especially with chemicals, can corrode the seals if left in the pumphead.
